Labor Day morning while attempting to leave, our garage door wouldn't completely close. Neither would it reopen. When I stepped out of the car, I heard the clicking that indicated a problem. I couldn't see anything blocking the eyes so my wife scooted under the door to manually open it. I heard a curse and she opened the door for me to see clouds of smoke pouring out of the ancient Genie opener. I quickly grabbed a ladder and got the opener unplugged then waited to verify we didn't have actual combustion. I jumped into Yelp to start looking for repair companies, knowing full well this was going to be a total replacement. I was impressed by the reviews, called and as expected, found them closed for the holiday. I phoned first thing Tuesday morning and spoke with Chris, the owner. (Yeah, I was a bit confused by this, but he said he'd purchased the business a while back and is consolidating the names to TLC Garage Doors.) They couldn't get a crew to us until Thursday, but his estimate was well below $500 which sounded very reasonable to have professionals change us to a quieter belt drive opener. The time came on Thursday and was nearly up when I got a call from the team leader explaining they had run into problems at the appointment right before ours. They were finishing up and would be here in under an hour. True to his word, they arrived, got excited about seeing the ancient system we inherited when we purchased the house and he used it to teach his assistant about what they were pulling out. He expected they would finish the inspections and the installation in an hour. Forty minutes later, we had a new (QUIET!) opener. The price was exactly as quoted as well, no surprise charges. We are beyond pleased with the product and service. We will be using TLCGD for annual tuneup service. Even though they had fewer reviews, I'm very happy we didn't go with one of the bigger names in the local market. If you need the work, give them a look before jumping elsewhere.
These guys are the real deal! Was given an estimate by A1 Garage Doors for $1500 (total rip off!) Steve fixed the problem for $113.00! Prompt service and professional work!
I talked to Chris and George came out the next morning very punctually. He was super at explaining things and tried to do some troubleshooting before he decided my motor was shot and needed to be replaced. Didn't try to sell me anything unnecessary, completed the work quickly and couldn't have been nicer and more proud of doing a good job with his work. I would recommend them to anyone.
Replaced my garage springs in a timely and professional manner. The work was done the same day I called in and he explained the whole process or replacing and tensioning the springs to me because I was curious.
Used the contact form on the website. Waited a week with no response. Now looking for another garage door repair company. My door is light so after disconnecting from motor it is easy to lift otherwise I would not have waited a week for a reply. I initially thought maybe on vacation or very busy....either way I'm looking elsewhere.
Very fast professional service. Completed the job when agreed and were able to replace the opener quickly.
Just wanted to add that I selected them based on their Yelp reviews - I didn't know of them previously.
I highly recommend Steve's Overhead Garage Doors and I would absolutely recommend them to family and friends. They were knowledgeable, affordable (straight forward with their prices) and they do quality work. I scheduled an appointment the same day I called, they called to let me know they were on their way, they showed up in a mask and they upgraded and fixed my garage in under an hour. The price I paid was 210.00 including tax.
The company is now owned by Chris of Chris' Garage Doors. I called with a garage door issue. Chris came over within an hour of my call. I thought I was going to have to buy a new garage door opener that can be mounted on the wall because the garage door wouldn't open all the way and a beam was blocking the track. Chris was determined and he was able to get it to open more without replacing the opener. So instead of spending $700+, it was only $70 to fix it. Chris didn't try to upsell anything and he saved me hundreds of dollars. He's a super nice guy. I highly recommend him!!!
Really, this is 4.75 stars, as I will elaborate on below. I typically do not write reviews, but I had such an unusual experience with this company that I am compelled to write about it. One thing I will note is that this company has changed hands. "Steve" is retired. The new owner has decided to keep the name, I imagine for marketing reasons and perhaps the fact that "Steve's Garage Doors" has a favorable position in the Yelp algorithm. The new owner is Chris from Chris' Garage Doors (we seem to have a running theme). I called Wednesday afternoon, Chris answered, and he arrived shortly after. I ultimately asked for a quote on a garage door. He stated he could do the installation for $685 including a seal and labor. I thought this was a great price. He was looking better than Steve already! I have two garage doors and asked him if the replacement would match the existing one. Chris said that the color might not match exactly and I told him this was fine. He then left my house. About 15 min later I called him back and told him I had changed my mind and wanted both doors replaced. He was happy to oblige. I very much appreciate that he didn't sell me on replacing both doors, unlike the the old owner, Steve. This was the reason I did not replace my garage doors sooner. At any rate, at such a good price, I was happy to have both doors done. Not only was the price great, but he and his assistant came the next morning - on time! They arrived at 8:30 and finished at around 10:00. Both doors looked excellent. One thing I will note, and this does not detract against the review, is that Chris quoted me a different price on arrival. It wasn't outrageously different. I believe it was a difference of about $20 per door. As a consumer you should always be careful about the quoted price because small errors do happen. It is especially easy to overlook such things when Chris brings his beautiful bulldog puppy to your home. I went mad taking pictures of the pup. And now on to the 0.25 detraction. I found an issue with the garage door installed by Chris' assistant. It seems that the door's attachment apparatus had become detached from garage motor track. I called Chris immediately fearing to fix it myself and void any warranty. Chris informed me that this was not covered by warranty (a bit condescendingly in his tone - clearly he has gotten this type of call before) but that he would send his assistant out within 30 min. And, true to the integrity and nature of Chris and his company, the assistant was there. Now, the precise nature of the point deduction has nothing to do with Chris himself, but his assistant. The assistant saw that the apparatus had become detached and immediately said "someone had to have pulled it loose." Now, there are a number of problems with this assertion. (1) This very same man had installed it less than 24 hours previously. Is he suggesting that it's inconceivable that he made and error in installation? (2) It is an incredibly bad business practice to blame the customer. If you want repeat business, you should never do this. This is not the first instance where I have encountered employees in ABQ that have never heard of the adage "the customer is always right." Finally, and most humorously, (3). I am a short man. Roughly 5'4". I demonstrated in front of the assistant that I physically could not reach the rope needed to dislodge the apparatus. Needless to say, the look on his face was less than pleasant when I deftly refuted his conclusion that "someone had to have pulled it loose." He then repeated that someone had to have done it. I replied "unless someone broke into my house and pulled it, that didn't happen." I also said that I would have had to use a step ladder to even reach the rope. He then said "I've been doing this 10 years and I have never seen it come loose by itself." I replied "well now you have!" I found the entire conversation hilarious and absurd. The logic of his statement is quite odd I think. Why would I, having paid over around 1500 for their services, cause my own garage door to be nonfunctional? Also, if I could not reach the rope, how would I do this by accident? I suppose that this is a long-winded way of saying these fellows are VERY defensive about their work. Which I understand, because honestly they did a fantastic job and I will most assuredly recommend them to everyone I know. My criticism is simply that they should be confident in their wonderful work.
