Review from T. S.

This is a long review, but I felt I need to be thorough with my experience. Keep in mind, I think, but not sure, James was installing a door in Paradise and I live in Orland, so about a 40-45 minute drive on a good day... here goes a long post, potatoes will be offered at the end...
My door is a standard two door, insulated R-13 door with a high lift setup and a LiftMaster opener, one of the best openers out there in my humble opinion. It was installed approximately 10 years ago, give or take a few. This problem occurred once before several years ago, but only one cable jumped off the drum that time.
My issue as of 7/18/2020. My garage door tossed both cables off their drums on a Saturday afternoon, yes, I said both cables. My door was half open or closed depending on your philosophical point of view. Security was an issue and I wanted help as soon as possible; hard to sleep at night knowing your home is not locked up.
I Googled "Garage Door Repair" and yelp was happy to make suggestions. I picked one contractor (not James Gates BTW) and called them. They showed 8am-5pm 7 day a week open status, so I expected a call or contact shortly. I never heard from them. This other contractor had some great reviews and was toted as a family owned and ran business, so I waited and wanted to support this business, being a small business owner myself, I figure what goes around comes and around. As of Monday morning at 9:00 am (about 66+/- hours after first reaching out) I still had not heard back from this other contractor. Also, for context, I do not block or otherwise spoof my phone number. Over that time, I did attempt to call them two additional times with extra information and just in hopes I might catch someone available. O well....
I then went back to the same Yelp search page, never closed it, and found James at "Gates Garage Door Service" and I am glad I did. I reached out through the Yelp with their "get a quote tab" and answered a few short questions and submitted the request. Within no time, doubt it was more than 4 minutes, I had an email response and I quickly called back and spoke with James's wife. She informed me he was working on a job installing a new door and would not be available till later that day, maybe around 4-4:30 if things went well... which, unless you are new to life, rarely seem too; take the year 2020 for example... COVID-19, you can take a looooong walk off a very short pier.
So we were getting close to the approximate time and I was contacted and told it would be between 6-7 pm. I had no issues with that and was glad to wait so I could lock up my home for that evening, sleep was getting thin and I owed too much to my "sleep debt bank".
James showed up and man, he was tired. I have been there. Working all day in a hot environment (think the high was 104 degrees that day) takes it out of you. But instead of tapping out and calling it a day, James was there, tired, but with a smile and great attitude. As he worked we talked and I enjoyed the conversation, James is a good guy with integrity and know how.
After fighting my stubborn door and getting both cables back on track, he told me some install fails concerning my door; one, the cables where too long (or the drums are too small) which caused them to wind around the drums too much creating the opportunity of the cables jumping off the drum. Two, the torsion bar was not straight. The middle mounting bracket was pulling the bar towards the front of my house and causing the door to slightly bounce or wobble as the bar went around, rolling or unrolling the cables, in order to lower or raise the door. This made total sense and I instantly knew what he meant, but was unaware why it did this for over a decade. Hell, I didn't even know it was a sign of trouble, just thought that was the way it is. James then took the time, a lot of it, to fix this problem. I told him to not worry about it and we could work it out at a later date since the door was back to normal from my point of view, but he insisted on making it right or he would "just be out here fixing it it later". That is integrity and taking pride in your work.
So fast forward to 9:15 pm; the door operates with fluid efficiency and a level of quiet I have never heard, or should say, cannot hear now.
Bottom line. This is the business you want for your garage door needs, whether its an install, maintenance or repair.
Thank you James, you the man!
